Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
