A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
